Selecting the best elastomer for an application involves being able to answer many
questions. That may seem overwhelming at first but the best place to begin is with
existing information.
Look for a material with a solid balance of the properties desired for the application.
For new products, similar applications can provide valuable information. Then ask
questions such as:
- To what temperature and other environmental factors will the seal be exposed?
- These can affect the long-term physical properties of a compound.
- What are the physical, mechanical and chemical resistance properties required for
your application?
- What industry standards must the compound meet such as UL, ASTM, SAE, FDA, NSF and
U.S. Military Standards.
